Abstract
This study intended to examine emotional avoidance as the origin of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), as a transdiagnostic cognitive vulnerability of depression and anxiety. The study also investigated if mindfulness moderates the influence of RNT on emotional disorders. Initially A sequential mediation model was set up, in which suppression of emotional expression occurred first and was followed by RNT inbetween life events and depression or anxiety. We tested the hypothesis that mindfulness will moderate this seguential pathologic mechanism. The Life Experiences Survey(LES), Attitude Toward Emotional Expression Scale(ATEES), Korean version of Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire(K-PTQ), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale(CES-D), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Korean version of Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire(K-FFMQ) were administered to 494 students at a Cyber University. The results were in agreement with our hypothesis and confirmed the significance of the moderated serial indirect effect. In other words, life events influenced depression and anxiety sequentially via suppression of emotional expression and RNT, and mindfulness moderates this process. This indicates that the initial avoidance of psychological burdens caused by life events triggers RNT and leads to emotional disorders. Mindfulness is a protective factor that can mitigate the pathologic process described above. This finding provides insight regarding mindfulness interventions targeted at RNT and its related pathology Finally we discussed the limitations of current study and future research directions.
